Systematic Suppression

Systematic Suppression is a drawing series within the long-term project Principle of Operation that investigates how perception changes as the sensory information guiding action is progressively reduced. Each drawing follows a predetermined sequence of repetitive mark-making under fixed conditions. As graphite accumulates, visual contrast decreases, the paper surface becomes smoother, and tactile and acoustic feedback gradually diminishes. Rather than responding to an image, the work observes how the body continues to act as the quality of sensory information steadily declines. The drawings function as records of prolonged body–material interaction rather than composed images. By maintaining a fixed procedure while allowing sensory conditions to change through repetition, the series examines how movement, attention, and perception reorganize when the signals that normally support precise action become increasingly difficult to distinguish.
